Environmental science popularization volunteer service adds green momentum to the development of mountainous areas

On July 23rd, a unique environmental knowledge popularization lecture was held in Longyue Village, Laolin Town, Yingshan County, Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, China. College environmental science popularization volunteers from Xihua Normal University systematically explained the significance and specific practices of environmental protection to some primary and secondary school students and villagers in the town. The simple and understandable language and diverse interactive design made the classroom full of fun and deeply implanted environmental protection concepts into the hearts of the people.

It is reported that in July of this year, the 2026 Sichuan Province "College Students in Action" environmental science popularization volunteer service activity was launched in Laolin Town, Yingshan County. The environmental knowledge popularization lecture held by it is one of the series of volunteer service activities. The event is guided by the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences and the Social Work Department of the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee, hosted by the Sichuan Society of Environmental Sciences, and led by the Environmental Education Center of Xihua Normal University. Its theme is "Science Empowers Green Development, Volunteers Build a Beautiful China Together".

We have formed a 'Green Action Jialing Practice Team' consisting of 2 guidance teachers and 10 college students to carry out environmental protection science popularization activities in Laolin Town from July 18th to 24th. Professor Li Youping, Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Xihua Normal University and Director of the Environmental Education Center, introduced that in the early stage, a group of college students with strong environmental protection concepts, solid environmental knowledge, and rich social practice experience were selected in the college to carry out online and offline publicity and research in Laolin Town, spreading the environmental protection concept of 'green mountains and clear waters are as valuable as mountains of gold and silver', and promoting people to develop the habit of protecting the environment and low-carbon life.

It is reported that this environmental science popularization volunteer team is divided into five small teams: ecological classroom, visiting and researching, visiting and practicing, environmental practice, and environmental monitoring. They wear green volunteer vests and promote environmental protection concepts through street trips, lectures, film and television appreciation, and other forms. At the same time, they also use the environmental protection classroom to allow primary and secondary school students to participate in environmental knowledge Q&A, handicrafts, interactive games, etc. Through practice, they enable children to recycle waste and turn waste into treasure.

The environmental science popularization volunteer service activity is a rare social practice. The series of environmental science popularization activities carried out in Laolin Town have illuminated the ecological path of rural areas with the light of science, spread green concepts in the fields, rooted environmental technology in thousands of households, and brought me happiness and growth, "said volunteer Zhang Xinmei from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at Xihua Normal University with emotion.

It is reported that "College Students in Action" is a large-scale national environmental science popularization and public welfare activity initiated by the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences since 2003, aiming to promote the development of ecological environment science popularization and enhance national scientific literacy. Since 2015, the Sichuan Environmental Science Society has been carrying out this activity for 11 consecutive years. In 2016, Xihua Normal University partnered with Chengnan Street in Yingshan County to launch the "Thousand Villages, Thousand Towns" environmental science popularization campaign. Ten years later, Xihua Normal University once again joined hands with the county to carry out various environmental science popularization volunteer service activities in Laolin Town, contributing to the town's green development.

We have been persisting in environmental protection science popularization volunteer service activities for 11 years. By training a child, driving a family, and influencing the whole society, we have let the fresh environmental protection wind cleanse the mountains and towns, injecting green energy into rural revitalization.
